The team at In-House Legal Solutions took a #mo-ment out of their day to mark the end of and discuss the importance of Movember.
Movember is a global campaign which aims to raise awareness, educate and raise funds for male cancers, mental health and suicide prevention. Since 2003, Movember has funded more than 1,250 men’s health projects around the world, challenging the status quo, shaking up men’s health research and transforming the way health services reach and support men. With alarming statistics including that on average, 60 men per hour take their own lives and 3 out of 4 suicides in the UK are by men – this charitable movement is an essential resource in understanding these figures and helping to overcome the challenges that men face regarding their physical and mental health.
Most notably, with over 51% of males making up the legal profession, it is imperative that law firms continue to discuss mental health and wellbeing inside and outside the workplace, so that its members feel supported and movements such as Movember can be widely advocated.
Shivani, one of In-House Legal Solutions’ mental health champions led the team discussion on male mental health, and the stigma that is often attached to the subject. Shivani also put together some mindful tips to help the team look after their mental health:
- Taking time off for yourself and practicing self-care. It is so important to rest and get the required sleep that you need to have enough energy to take on the day and prevent from burnout.
- Disconnect from work. Even stepping away from your desk for 10 minutes can help you to re-focus and re-charge.
- Hobbies and investing in other interests. Yoga, reading, music, cooking, sport, travel – these are all things that our team love to do and talk about. Doing something you love will energise you, give you an outlet to express yourself and help you to create a healthy work life balance.
- Helping others. One of the best ways to break the cycle of negative thinking is to help other people, and the firm widely advocates this by encouraging staff to take up two volunteering days a year. Not only does giving back make a difference in your community, but it can also help improve your sense of self. Select a task or organization that lines up with your interests and volunteer your time. The pleasure you’ll experience is worth the effort.
