Spring signals the start of the legal conference season, where both private practice and in-house lawyers meet to discuss trends, share ideas and see the latest tech developments. The number of conferences taking place have exploded in recent years, with events being held around the country and even as far afield as mainland Spain.
Inevitably however, neither time nor budget allows attendance at all of them, so we’ve done our research and highlighted our favourite conferences based on factors like topic, affordability and benefits for in-house lawyers.
You can’t actually buy a ticket to the Lawyer’s GC Strategy Summit, attendees are hand-picked following a registration process. Held in the Meliá Villaitana in Valencia, this conference is for those that want to rub shoulders with those in the highest echelons of the in-house world. And get a tan whilst doing it.
Crafty Counsel’s Crafty Fest has grown into a really popular conference focusing just on in-house counsel. On the smaller side at around 800 delegates the conference has an intimate feel and is well suited to its venue at Regent’s University. With four stages the event focuses on the role of in-house counsel and includes interactive round table sessions as well as demonstrations from legal tech providers. Also very keenly priced so well worth the visit.
Probably the biggest, brashest, and most expensive conference on the list, LegalTechTalk is a newby to the conference circuit being in only its third year. What it lacks in age it makes up in ambition, with over 400 speakers over six stages, and every tech vendor you could think of and more in attendance. Downsides are the cost and potentially the fact that it is all the way over by the O2. Still well worth the trek in our opinion though.
Held in the stunning Law Society’s Hall on Chancery Lane, this conference is a unique opportunity to discuss the issues of the day affecting in-house lawyers, and to keep up with the latest guidance and information published by the Law Society. Past conferences have focused on issues such as solicitors ethics following the Horizon scandal, and this year the theme focuses on the pressures on in-house counsel to adapt to rapidly changing landscapes and the global environment. And the best part – its free, so book in early.
Wrapping up the end of the conference season is the fan’s favourite Legal Geek. Headed by the eponymous Jimmy Vestibirk, the high fives are out in force at this relaxed event on Brick Lane where even dogs are welcome. Showcasing an excellent array of legal tech and with a star speaker each year (previous headliners include Mel B and Stephen Fry) Legal Geek is the perfect place to listen to Ted style talks on topics such as wellbeing and personal development, as well as meeting tech vendors at the end of the day over a beer.
